Here are some questions to consider when deciding on a new platform for your workspace or classroom.
1. To share or not to share.
Edit - do you want users to be able to edit and share existing documents?
Access - How much information will be available to anyone online and how much will be available to your users only?
Numbers - How many users do you have? How active are they?
2. Types of media
Organize your material by media type. Make sure your chosen platform can play the files you want to use. If it can't is it
possible to embed players/apps into the platform?
3. Types of users
Novice - users are not comfortable in a computer environment and have problems with basic email functions such as
attachments and forwarding.
Experienced - can navigate simple to moderately complex interfaces and can find solutions online to most questions.
4. Compatibility with existing software *(ie office, google) and social media?
- Can you use Googledocs or Skydrive with this platform? Is it connected to Twitter or Linked In?
- Are you currently using software that could be adapted to your needs? If your office uses Microsoft Web Apps you may already have access to Skydrive.
5. Level of control
Interface - how important is design? How much time do you want to spend maintaining the platform.
Apps - do you want to be able to add gadets/widget/apps such as games and music players?
Interaction - how much time do you want to spend on maintenance? Do you want a discussion forum?
6. Cost
Paid services are often more robust and offer telephone support and have no advertising.
Free services usually have advertising, minimal support and a limited number of features.
